Library Cards

Any California resident may obtain a Colton Public Library card at no charge. Identification (showing a photo and date of birth) with current proof of address is required for adults 18 years and older. A parent or guardian's signature is required for persons under 18. All persons applying for a card must be present.

Library cards may be registered in person at your local library branch or online. If completing the form online, the cardholder must visit the library with their photo ID and proof of address to complete the registration process and receive their library card.

You must have your library card present to check out materials or to use the public computers. Library cards are not transferable to persons other than the cardholder.

In the event that a card is lost, stolen, or damaged, replacements are available for the following fees:

  • $1.50: All Juveniles
  • $3.00: City of Colton Residents
  • $5.00: City of Colton Non-Residents

Library accounts may be managed in person or online. To protect your privacy, report any lost or stolen library cards to the library immediately.

Computer Usage

You must have your library card present in order to use the public computers. Public computer sessions are limited to 1 hour, once per library card each day. Please be aware that the public computers will no longer allow new sessions 40 minutes before closing, and will shut down automatically 20 minutes before closing.

Computer Guest Passes are available only for Out-of-State Patrons for a fee of $2.00.

Check-Out Limits

Books marked as "New" are limited to 2 check-outs per card. For other books and magazines, there is no limit to how many items you may check out. There is a limit of eight DVD's, CD's, and audio-books at a time per card.

Due Dates

We place a date due card in each item as it is checked out. We ask that you return materials with the date due cards or there will be a $1.50 fee for each missing card.

  • White due date cards are used for two-week loans, such as books and magazines.
  • Green due date cards are used for one-week loans, such as new books, CD's, educational DVDs, and audio-books.
  • Orange due date cards are used for one-business day loans, such as DVDs.

There is a maximum renewal of two times per item borrowed. Everything, except DVDs, can be renewed by telephone. DVDs must be renewed in person with your library card.

Fees

Everything checked out at the Colton Public Library is free to borrow, as long as it is returned on time. Late fees begin accruing the business day following the due date on each item as follows:

  • Adult books and magazines - $0.25 per day
  • CD's and audio books - $0.25 per day
  • Children's books - $0.10 per day
  • DVDs - $1.00 per day

Please return all DVDs and CD's to our indoor audiovisual drop during business hours. After business hours, return them to the outdoor book drop.

Printing

Printing is available at all City of Colton Public Library locations through our public computers. Printing fees are:

  • $0.25 per Black and White page
  • $0.50 per Color page

Wi-Fi printing is also available. Wi-Fi printing does not require a library card and is available on all compatible wireless devices.

Payment

The Colton Public Library accepts cash for all payment of fees. Card and Apple Pay are valid only for total payments of a minimum of $5.00. Friends of the Library item purchases are cash only.
