Challenge of Gophers and Ground Squirrels

The Challenge of Gophers and Ground Squirrels

One of the most persistent issues at Hermosa Gardens has been long-term gopher and ground squirrel activity, which has damaged the grounds, disrupted markers, and compromised irrigation systems. To address this, the City is launching a more aggressive gopher elimination program with a specialized vendor.

The Challenge:
Gophers and ground squirrels are a generational problem at Hermosa Gardens. Left unchecked, they:

  • Create uneven and unstable ground — a safety risk for visitors and staff.
  • Shift and sink headstones and markers, compromising the dignity of gravesites.
  • Destroy irrigation lines and root systems, worsening dry patches and landscaping issues.
  • Diminish the overall appearance and safety of the cemetery.

The Solution:
The City is implementing a new, more aggressive gopher elimination program with a specialized vendor. This program will:

  • Use targeted, humane, and effective techniques to reduce gopher populations.
  • Improve ground stability and protect markers.
  • Support the restoration of healthy landscaping and a dignified cemetery environment.

“Controlling gophers isn’t just about landscaping, it’s about protecting the integrity of the resting places of our loved ones.”
